In tegenstelling tot het in de barok gangbare klavecimbel, was de fortepiano bij uitstek geschikt om emoties te leggen in de uitvoering. De opkomst van de romantiek vroeg om verklanking van gevoelens van weemoed, verlangen, liefde, passie en extase.
